With the security online a little doubtful, one can expect that online shopping is an easy way to get ripped off. Online shopping is convenient for customers. But it’s also very enjoying for scammers who hook on a pool of potential victims.

This is especially true during the holiday season, wherein lots of customers shop online instead to avoid the crowd of the holiday rush. This would be a great opportunity for scammers to defraud consumers who are either in a hurry to make a purchase or still a beginner at online shopping.

Consumers should stay alert on auctions and classified ad sites. A lot of fraudulent acts take place in these sites. Consumers should also be careful on the kinds of emails they receive. Phishing activities also increases in the holiday season.

While we cannot entirely stay away from these online scams, we can always do our best to avoid them. Here are some ways to help you with security when shopping online:

Update Your Security Software. Protection for your computer is essential. Make sure you’ve updated your firewall, antivirus, and antispyware programs.

Check Whether The Site and Store Is Legit. You might come across a new site and a store you’ve never heard of. Before buying anything from them, check whether the store is legit and can be trusted.

You can look for its physical address, or get their telephone number or email address. You can also check with the Better Business Bureau and see if the company is associated with them or not, or if there are any complaints against them.

There is also a site called Network Solutions, and it has an online security certification program called SiteSafe. Another site that deals in online security is ScanAlert, and it has a program called Hacker Safe. The logo of these companies are usually placed on the home page of online shopping sites. Click on them to make sure they’re real and check on the site’s certification status.

Avoid Doubtful Deals. Shopping online auction and classified ad sites are really risky. There are offers and ads that are hard to comprehend and are sometimes crazy enough to have you raise an eyebrow. You might have come across a scam advertisement where a new and ordinarily expensive merchandise is being offered for a low price or for free if the buyer pays for the shipment. This would really be suspicious.

Payment through a wire service is also suspicious activity. There is no reason why somebody would want to have the payment wired to them unless it’s fraudulent.

Make a Temporary Account For Your Payment Options. There are institutions that offer temporary account numbers for their cardholders. Bank of America and Discover are two of these. This service is very helpful for many who are wary of giving their credit card information online. You can’t use the temporary accounts for all purchases, however.

Verify Your Bank’s Emails. You might receive a phishing email that would seem to have come from a bank or credit card company. When you receive an email like this, especially after you’ve just mad a purchase, call the number on your bank statement or credit card to check and see whether it was really from them. Don’t click on a link from the email, and don’t use the phone number sent by that email (unless it really is from your bank).

Remember to always be wary of to whom and where you’re giving your financial information. The holiday season is a perfect opportunity online scams, and it can be difficult to know which is a true and which is a fraud.

Usability

There has always been this debate on which one of these two brings in more traffic and more sales: usability or search engine optimization? Some would pick usability over SEO, saying your site has to be user-friendly and provides the customers with correct and helpful content to be able to attract visitors and customers. Others would pick SEO, defining that you have to push your products and services for greater visibility to the online community.

This push or pull spectacle has been present for a long time now. Isn’t it about time to offer a different view?

How about the combination of the two? Usability AND search engine optimization in one! Push AND pull! That would definitely give an online business great visibility, more traffic, and more sales. Combining the two will have three factors involved:

1. You need to know how your user or visitor would want your site would look and how it should give information that they need. Basically, it’s like putting yourself in their shoes and looking for site designs that would appeal most to you.

2. Each web page should just be like your home page, in a sense that the design would still appeal to the visitors’ eyes. The structure of the site should give many openings to the other pages. You home page shouldn’t be the only one that has all the good stuff. Do the same with every page.

3. Always make sure that the message you’re conveying is very clear to the users. For example, if you’re selling blankets and pillows, your site should be optimized of “blankets and pillows” and the design should speak clearly of your products and services.

Taking these three would not be that difficult if you put yourself in the shoes of the users. These three also makes up the fact that you can indeed put usability and SEO together. Both complement each other. If your site has a great design and the message is clear, and you pushed it into the search engines, then that would be a treat to both you and the users. Your site will be easily found, it would attract the user, and it would be very helpful for the users that they would certainly be satisfied with your business. You would be satisfied, too, since this speaks of traffic and sales.

There are many ways to promote your online business. Over the years, several online marketing techniques have been developed to further improve on the visibility and exposure of a business in the Web. But many still prefer to stick the simple and easy marketing strategies that are more or less the basic ways of getting noticed online.

Building Links: For more visibility in the search engines, it is important to achieve a good ranking. Search for your main keyword and terms that are related to your website. Build links all over the Web by reciprocal linking, building quality content, and submitting your link to site directories.

Article Submissions: Interesting and quality articles are very much appreciated by the online community. For online businesses and marketers, article submissions are also very helpful in leading visitors to their sites. By submitting your articles to the article directories, you will have gained good back links to your site. Search engine crawlers will dig up on this and will increase your rankings.

Affiliate Marketing: Networking with other websites can increase targeted traffic! In a way, you are building links (through the ads) on other sites that are in the same niche as yours. The best thing about affiliate marketing is that the traffic is targeted. The downside is that it will cost you the commissions of affiliate sales.

Newsletters: Newsletters also bring you targeted traffic when you send them to clients and customers that are really interested in your niche. Content is king, so when sending your newsletters, you have to make sure it can boost traffic and repeat sales. Newsletters are also a way to maintain your business relationships with the clients and customers.

Forums: Participating and giving good replies and content on forums also help in forming relationships with the people who has the same interests and are in the same niche as you. You can also place links to your site on your signature in every post you make!

Email Marketing: We’re not talking of spamming or sending annoying messages that can drive your clients and customers away. The purpose of email marketing is to generate more sales and traffic to your site. In order to do so, you have to provide quality content in your emails that can be valuable to the customers.

Building a harmonious relationship to others is a very important factor to achieve success in your business. It is one secret method in achieving your goal as an entrepreneur. Because these people around you, may it be customers, employees, vendors etc.. has contributed a lot in the business industry. So, why don’t you try to interact with these people and know them by heart. Holiday season is here once again for you to make your one most important new year’s resolution. Try to take it step by step by learning these “Ten ways you can start strengthening your business relationships in the upcoming year.” by Freyvogel:

1.Learn as much as you can about everyone you work with. Then, act on that knowledge. You need to know as much as possible about everyone from your customers to your vendors to your employees so that when their needs change, you can be there to provide them with what they need to stay happy with your business.

2.Treat your vendors like honorary employees. It’s important to nurture relationships with those people who aren’t necessarily working for you but who service you or your company regularly. This can mean anyone from the package delivery guy who stops by every day to the materials supplier who keeps your warehouse stocked to the designer who keeps your website updated.

3.Know everyone’s birthday. You might be thinking, How much of a difference will saying “Happy birthday” really make? Well, the answer is a big one. People love to be acknowledged no matter the reason. And in a world where everyone is so wrapped up in their own lives, getting a happy birthday wish from the people you regularly come into contact with is becoming a rarity.

4.Encourage a sense of ownership among your employees. Whether it comes from having a voice in major decisions, being able to work directly with clients, or actually owning stock, a sense of ownership will go a long way toward creating strong ties between your employees and your business. Inspiring your employees to love your business as much as you do will strengthen your company’s foundation and your business will be that much more likely to survive setbacks and grow to great heights.

5.Have one-on-one conversations with your customers to find out what you can do better. Most of the time unsatisfied customers don’t approach you with a detailed list of the things they’d like for you to improve on. They just leave you for one of your better-equipped competitors. Therefore, you must set aside some time to ask them what they need from you.

6.Make your start-up loan payments on time, no matter what. Always have enough money in your account to make your monthly loan payments when they’re due. It’s also a good idea to set up a separate emergency account and make sure you put something in it every month — someday you’ll be glad you did. You don’t want to gain a reputation with your bank as someone who doesn’t make loan payments on time. Staying close to your bankers can also help you secure your finances. Set up a safety system with them to ensure that all of your deposits are going through in a timely manner.

7.Contact your mentors frequently. Think about those people who gave you valuable advice when you were trying to get your business off the ground, or that person you call immediately when you need advice. That person is your mentor, and you want to have a close relationship with her so that she is willing to go that extra mile to help you build your business.

8.Constantly recognize a job well done. Everyone likes to be told they’ve done a good job on something, especially your employees. Typically, people who are interested in working for small businesses are driven more by recognition than by dollars. So whether you implement an Employee of the Month plaque or simply say, “Thanks for the great job!”, never miss an opportunity to give your employees the recognition they deserve. And when a client compliments an employee’s work, never steal the credit — indeed, be sure to pass the glowing review along to the rightful owner! And let everyone in the company know. It’s good for morale to know that recognition might be coming their way some time in the future.

9.Be flexible with the people you count on. As a business owner you should know that rarely will a day turn out exactly how you had planned for it to. That is why it is so important for you to be flexible when those around you run into problems and need to change their schedules in a way that affects your business. Maybe one of your vendors needs to make a delivery earlier or later than normal or maybe an employee has to leave to take care of a family problem. Don’t sigh and act annoyed, says Freyvogel, even if it’s very inconvenient for you.

10.Make sure employees have everything they need to do their jobs. Nothing frustrates a high-performing employee more than having to struggle to do his job because he doesn’t have the right computer program or because he must make do with faulty equipment.

“No matter how determined, hardworking, and talented you may be, you simply can’t be a successful entrepreneur all by yourself. It takes a village to run a company. Never forget that fact is critical to your success.”
